What’s New in Music 12/4/2007

December 4th, 2007 by Eric Atienza · No Comments

Another week, another Tuesday, another flurry of new music. As new albums drop, this column will do its best to track the notable releases so you don’t have to. Only new material is included in this list; compilations, re-releases, live albums and remixes will generally not be covered.

This week is a much more active week in music than the last few. There are many releases from acts that are both well established and just starting out. Whether your tastes run underground or mainstream you should have a new album or two to keep you busy as the Christmas shopping season gets fully underway.

  • The Crash That Took Me - Orchestrated Kaleidoscopes
  • This six-piece rock band from Dallas, Texas labels themselves as “Indie/Experimental/Pop”. If that’s the case it’s an experiment that started 20 years ago and the results have been playing in mainstream rock for the last decade. They are not unpleasant, however, and fans of unassuming, radio-friendly rock should eat these songs up.

  • Pants Yell! - Alison Statton
  • Apparently this group out of Caimbridge, Mass. felt it was a shame Belle and Sebastian didn’t make more records like The Boy with the Arab Strap and decided to fill the void. They write pleasant, soft pop songs that are definitely good for an afternoon of head bobbing and toe tapping. Fun times.

  • Memphis May Fire - Memphis May Fire
  • Who said that post-hardcore was dead? For those looking for a follow-up to this year’s release from The Used or who wait anxiously for Finch’s next album since they reunited, try this on for size. Everyone else should just keep reading.

  • Blake Lewis - Audio Daydream (ADD)
  • Also known as “That guy that beatboxed all of his songs on American Idol.” If you’re into this album you probably, like, totally knew this was, like, coming out, like, forever ago. Duh.

  • Kylie Minogue - X
  • I just can’t get her out of my head.
Boy, she’s more than I dare to think about.

  • Ghostface Killah - The Big Doe Rehab
  • This critically acclaimed Wu Tang alumnus drops his 7th solo album.

  • Wyclef Jean - Carnival II: Memories of an Immigrant
  • The Fugees alum’s 6th studio album. I was a bit put off hearing that Akon will be guesting, but appearances by Mary J. Blige, will.i.am and Paul Simon assuaged my doubt.

Things have finally started to pick up but don’t let yourself get lost in this flurry of releases. Music doesn’t stop just because you stop looking out for it and with Christmas approaching you definitely don’t want to get caught missing out on What’s New.
