TBTMTU: My Old Kentucky Blog

December 12th, 2007 by Jacob Nicolas · No Comments

My Old Kentucky Blog, founded by Dodge(click for an interview) is definitely the most high profile music blog I’ve featured up to this point, and that fact is both a strength and a weakness.

On one hand a blog as visibly successful as MOKB has to have something going for it, and on the other music blogs are like coffee shops, you have your Starbucks’ and you have your mom & pop places and something just makes you feel icky walking into a Starbucks (what with the faux hipster slobs and all). That said, MOKB is in no way at the level of the Pitchfork/Stereogum’s of the world, however it may soon be. The first thing you’ll notice on MOKB’s page is the worst thing about it, the advertisements, the heavy ad content of MOKB may be a turn off for some but if you are willing to cut through the clutter you’ll find some very interesting things.

One thing that sets apart MOKB from other blogs is how many band interviews they’ve done and will continue to be doing (their goal is one every day for the month of December!), and the fact that Dodge has a weekly show on Sirius Radio which can only add readership.

In terms of content featured MOKB is top notch. I really enjoy the Covers Project which is where MOKB picks a song and tries to find as many covers of it from as many bands as possible, obviously this makes for finding some gems and some injustices but mainly you’ll find that some of your favorite bands have covered some of your other favorite bands and you didn’t even know it!

I’m giving MOKB a modest 3 out of 5 mainly due to the ad content (it is possible to advertise without Busted Tees ads you know) and the slight “Holier Than Thou”/In Your Face vibe I get from it. It’s a good blog, but it could be even better. I’ll leave you with these words from Dodge

I think music blogs are very important and will only continue to grow in number, but I believe you only have so much room at the top and a couple have firmly supplanted themselves up there, but even though that may be true, there is plenty of room period, you know what I mean?
