Hip-hop often comes under attack for its lyrical content, such as the glorification of drug use, the focus on a largely material life, and the promotion of violence. However, one issue that often stands out from the others is the apparent representation of women as objects and other misogynist practises.

Diggin’ the Virtual Crates: Buying Records Online
February 27th, 2008 by Evan Mix · No Comments
I don’t like buying used records online. You lose out on all the charm of the dusty little record shop, the joy of flipping through records in crates, and – most crucial – the all-important chance to try before you buy. A damaged record isn’t much use, after all, nor is one that you just […]

TBTMTU: Superette
February 27th, 2008 by Jacob Nicolas · No Comments
Superette is a video weblog rather than an mp3 blog, posting music and music related videos with stunning commentary - and if you know French, the commentary is even better!
What amazes me most about Superette is how they are able to dig up these gems of videos amidst the slew of crappy live recordings. The […]

Rewind to 2000: Erykah Badu and Mama’s Gun
February 25th, 2008 by Kimberlee Morrison · No Comments
Erykah Badu is known as a neo-soul pioneer and for displaying artistry in a time when such appeared lacking in R&B. The genre seemed to be on its way to becoming an extension of hip hop while simultaneously birthing pop artists and new sub-genres. While Badu has even admitted that she’s not sure what it […]

Artist Profile: Iron & Wine
February 22nd, 2008 by stolte-sawa · No Comments
Remember that M&Ms commercial that aired a ways back; the one that made you feel like you were being lulled into a chocolaty childhood dreamland? Mmm. So sweet, so silky. Melts in your ears. That may have been your first taste of Iron & Wine.

TBTMTU: Feed Me Good Tunes
February 21st, 2008 by Jacob Nicolas · No Comments
In the world of music blogging, there are three main categories into which almost every blog falls: the plain-Jane music blog, with posts of one or two songs and a short description (which, as we’ve seen, can be anything but plain); the music news/new music blog, which posts song files topically; and, arguably the rarest […]

Diggin’ the Crates: The Reissue Question
February 20th, 2008 by Evan Mix · 1 Comment
Reissues are always controversial in vinyl-collecting circles. The true purist never buys reissued records (or such is the rhetoric). But of course, unless you’ve got a nearly unlimited budget, there are some records you simply won’t be able to own without compromising your principles a little. So, where do you draw the line?

Note to Republicans: Rock Musicians are Usually Liberal
February 19th, 2008 by Eric Atienza · No Comments
On the Republican side in this election cycle many if not most of the candidates have been running the “I’m the most like Ronald Reagan” campaign. This has been true during the debates, in their stump speeches, and just like when Reagan famously praised Bruce Springsteen, in the music they choose to associate with their […]
