What’s New in Music 2/5/2008

February 5th, 2008 by Eric Atienza · No Comments

Another week, another Tuesday, another flurry of new music. As new albums drop, this column will do its best to track the notable releases so you don’t have to. Only new material is included in this list; compilations, re-releases, live albums and remixes will generally not be covered.

  • Hot Chip - Made in the Dark
  • The British electronic pop quintet is at it again.

  • Lenny Kravitz - It’s Time for a Love Revolution
  • If you’ve ever heard a Lenny Kravitz record before, nothing on here will probably surprise you. Actually, if you’ve ever heard a Hendrix record before, none of Kravitz’ records will ever surprise you. Zing!

  • Nada Surf - Lucky
  • Hey! It’s these guys! Remember them?!

  • Jack Johnson - Sleep Through the Static
  • For a while it was (and still might be for all I know) “cool” for annoying college guys to try and impress people by popping their collars and playing Dave Mathews, John Mayer, and Jack Johnson on their guitars. Much to my chagrin, I actually respect the Jack Johnson. Though not the annoying college guys.

  • Sheryl Crow - Detours
  • Sheryl Crow gets kind of a bad rap in “hip”, “young” and/or “awake” circles but really, if she makes you happy she can’t be that bad.

  • Yip -Yip - Two Kings of the Same Kingdom
  • If you’re ever playing a video game on your original Playstation and for some reason the music cuts out, throw this on and you’ll be all set.

  • Jason Collett - Here’s the Being Here
  • Would the week be complete without an indie/folk singer-songwriter?

  • Bob Mould - District Line
  • Hey! This guy used to front Husker Du! And it seems like that’s why he was allowed to make this album!

That about does it for this week (until, of course, prompt arrives to inform me of the hip-hop albums I’ve missed. Nobody can be on top of everything, but you’ll certainly be better off than most if you keep an eye out for What’s New.
