TBTMTU: Free Indie

February 6th, 2008 by Jacob Nicolas · No Comments

Free IndieFree Indie is one of those sites that once discovered you know that you’ve stumbled onto something great; afterwards, you wonder how you ever lived your life without it.

Let me be frank: the world of music blogging is almost always illegal. Posting a song to be downloaded without explicit permission from the copyright holder violates copyright law, period. Every music blogger runs the risk of the dreaded cease and desist letter (the same way that we all run the risk of being struck by lightning). Now if you’re the type that’s turned off by the thought of doing something less than legal, have no fear: Free Indie is here. While they don’t explain it in full anywhere on the site (besides the banner image saying that it’s free, legal, and guiltless music) I’m assuming that Free Indie gets its music straight from the independent artists/labels, with permission to post on their site. What this means is that Free Indie can post quite a few songs from each artist rather than the slim pickings that most other music blogs offer. This also means that Free Indie can keep the downloads live indefinitely, and need not take them down after a certain period of time, which is good for us (the readers) when we are searching for that tune that was posted a year ago. Free Indie also lets you download individual tracks as mp3’s or several at a time in zipped files, which is extremely considerate on their part.
When it comes to archiving their posts, Free Indie does it flawlessly, sorting by genre rather than month, which makes it easy to find what you’re looking for.

The only downside to Free Indie is that you better forget about leaving comments - spambots and trolls have utterly destroyed most of their comment boards. Seriously, I haven’t seen this much spam since 5 minutes ago when I went on YouTube.

Free Indie is currently undergoing some remodeling and posts are infrequent, but will hopefully be back up to speed soon (with an improved commenting system).

Comment spamming aside, Free Indie is an excellent blog.
