Interview With Singer Justin Townes Earle

March 31st, 2008 by scoop · No Comments

When BloodShot Records sent me a copy of the debut album by Justin Townes Earle, the son of songwriter Steve Earle, I quickly requested an interview with him. While the interview was shorter than I would have liked - he being a man of few words - the album itself is damn fine stuff.

What’s the Big Deal with Vampire Weekend?

March 28th, 2008 by Eric Atienza · No Comments

In late March 2007 as I was getting off the subway I picked up a copy of the most recent issue of The L Magazine. The week’s feature was “8 New York Bands You Need to Hear” and I, always on the lookout for bands I need to hear, eagerly paged through the to […]

Women In Music: Feist

March 28th, 2008 by stolte-sawa · No Comments

Thanks to the iPod Nano, everyone in the English-speaking world has heard “1234″ and indie boys utter her name with lust and reverence (and a little envy that she slides so easily into those skinny jeans). With sold-out shows worldwide and nearly half a million records sold, Leslie Feist is the little indie rocker that […]

Anti-Emo Violence Erupts in Mexico… Nobody Saw This Coming

March 27th, 2008 by Eric Atienza · No Comments

In the United States these days the term “emo” is widely misunderstood, sometimes to hilarious effect. The modern emo subculture is often the butt of jokes from all sections of American society and is widely seen as a subset of overly depressed, angsty, suburban teens whose social status is derived from who can out-miserable whom. March 26th, 2008 by Evan Mix · No Comments

After a brief hiatus, Diggin’ the Crates is back. This week, let’s talk about thrift store records. In a lot of ways, this is my favorite kind of digging. You never can tell what you’ll find in a crate in the back of a suburban Goodwill. So, what are the keys to successful thrift store […]

March 26th, 2008 by Colin Wonnacott · No Comments

The creme de la creme of rap and rock come together in The Hood Internet, a duo of mashup DJs: STV SLV and ABX.
I’ve always been a big fan of the remix. To me, it can be an awesome tool; to re-imagine, revise, or simply add a different flavor to a song. They are a […]

Don’t Make A Mixtape… Make A Muxtape!

March 25th, 2008 by Evan Mix · 2 Comments

When was the last time you made a mixtape? Until five minutes ago, the answer for me was, “It’s been so long, I don’t remember.” But now, thanks to Muxtape.com the answer is, “Just five minutes ago. Want to hear it?”

Press Play: A Review Of The RaconteursConsolers of the Lonely

March 25th, 2008 by Mykola Bilokonsky · 2 Comments

Here’s one we didn’t see coming: The Raconteurs went into the studio early this month, took a week to record a new album, rushed it to press and quietly announced it a week before its release. It came out today, available everywhere - but due to the secrecy and speed of its release you […]

Listening In Live to Tilly and the Wall: 3/21/2008

March 25th, 2008 by Eric Atienza · No Comments

Since the moment they decided to use Jamie Williams‘ tap-dancing feet for percussion instead of drums, Tilly and the Wall has been a band unafraid of taking chances with its music. This fondness for experimentation was once again clear from the six brand new songs that were on exhibit during the group’s latest stop at […]
