I have to admit that when I first discovered this blog, I wasn’t too impressed. It just seemed too linear, too straightforward, too plain, which may have something to do with the blog’s design (as the standard blog is inherently linear). However, once you scrape past the surface, Blogs are for Dogs shines to it’s full potential.
Hailing from Dallas, Texas, Blogs are for Dogs has become one of the most finely tuned music blogs around, boasting more features than you can shake a stick at and proving that even blogs are bigger in Texas.
Take a look at the ‘Categories’ section of the side bar. You have your standard fare:
- Album Reviews
Best of Lists
Concerts (the author goes to seemingly every concert in and around Central Texas)
Contests
But after this, the features start getting more eclectic:
-
Monday Morning Mixtape (a dose of tunes to start off the week)
Monthly Recap (something I wish more blogs did: a summation of the month that was, along with all of the mp3 links!)
New Music Tuesday (does what it says on the tin)
The most interesting feature of Blogs are for Dogs is Short Story Saturday, which is where an entire classic short story is posted, with mp3’s mixed in along the way to coincide with the mood. Authors of the short stories range from Hemingway to Poe to D.H. Lawrence.
While Blogs are for Dogs may have some unique features, most of the ones I’ve covered here show the last post date to be in 2007. Now while I would like to say that it takes time for these kinds of posts to be well thought out and perfected, it seems that some of these series are dead or frustratingly infrequent. However, the mp3’s for Blogs are for Dogs seem to be up longer than the standard two weeks, and posts from several months ago still have working links (meaning you can enjoy the backlog of content at your leisure).
While Blogs are for Dogs is an impressive music blog in most aspects, it struggles to provide the basic security that all readers crave: regularity. It is a blog that went from being something completely unique and special to simply being a very good music blog, which isn’t so bad a fall from grace in the greater scheme of things.
