TBTMTU: Said the Gramophone

March 19th, 2008 by Jacob Nicolas · No Comments

gramophone.jpgSaid The Gramophone is a pleasantly clean cut “pistachio-green” blog that’s had the time to perfect its style. From the site:

“said the gramophone launched in march 2003, and added songs in november of that year. it was one of the world’s very first mp3blogs.”

Said the Gramophone is a blog that knows what it wants and knows what it set out to do, never letting popularity get in the way of the original mission statement.

StG does not have advertisements and instead relies on reader donations once a year

“Said the Gramophone is never going to be the biggest mp3blog in the world. We are too set in our weird, woolly ways. We try to do just one thing - writing with spirit about the songs we love, - and to do that one thing well. Our audience is you. That’s it. There’s no one else. You small, strange gang. We cherish our rare contacts - and every March we ask for your help.”

Commandeering the blog are 3 friends based out of Quebec, who write with a wit and style, about pop culture as well as music, that makes me wonder what they do for their day jobs.

On the technical side, StG combines archiving in the form of traditional calendar style and by a search function that works quite well. As an added secret treat, all of the song files posted on StG are hosted at www.gramotunes.com/ (which automatically redirects you to www.saidthegramophone.com, but if you’re clever enough I’m sure you could work something out, do with that what you will you tech savvy folks)

Be sure to check out the results of The Wonderful Video Contest Said the Gramophone hosted which challenged the creative to make their own videos to their favourite songs.

All in all Said the Gramophone is an elder in terms of mp3 blogs, but it has aged like fine wine. It’s worthy of a bookmark and gets 5 out of 5 bunches of grapes.
