If there’s one thing that defines hipsterism, it’s irony - and the mashup is fertile ground for irony. Since this is a hip(ster)-hop mix, I tried to distill the oddest, funniest, and most unexpected tracks from the irony-fest that is The Hood Internet. Hang on - it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
As you read along, go ahead and fire up the Muxtape by clicking here. You can download these and many other tracks for free by visiting TheHoodInternet.com, and I recommend you do so.
This article is a response to a Mix published last week by Wonnacottyledon.
The Hood Internet - re:Mix
- Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg vs. Fujiya and Miyagi - “The Next Collarbone”It’s amazing how well these two tracks mesh. Totally unexpected.
- Amerie vs. Daft Punk - Take Control of Da FunkDaft Punk’s “Da Funk” is as iconic as everything Amerie has recorded is replaceable. Somehow, it works.
- E-40 vs. Jens Lenkman - “Tell Me When To Leave (Oh You’re So Hyphy Jens)”Ahh, hyphy. Can anyone who knows what it means hear that word and not crack a sardonic smile? Wait… what does that word mean?
- Cyndi Lauper vs. Dizzee Rascal - Girls Just Wanna Fix UpThis one definitely isn’t easy on the ears, but it makes me laugh. Today, that was enough.Goddamn this track is weird.
- R. Kelly(f. Kid Rock and Ludacris) vs. Jens Lenkman - “If I Could Rock (It Would Feel Like This)”Any song with R. Kelly and Kid Rock on it is irony enough for me.
- Rick Ross vs. CSS - “Push It To The Alalimit”No, it’s not your imagination - that’s really “Push It to the Limit.” Sports training montage, anyone?
- Styles P vs. Vampire Weekend - “Punk Your Mind”Vampire Weekend is the ultimate hipster irony-fest. Too bad they’re not very good. I guess the joke’s on them after all.
- Tag Team vs. LCD Soundsystem - “Great! There It Is”Ahh, mauling a classic. It doesn’t get any better than that.
- T-Pain vs. Cloud Cult - “Collide You A Drank”T-Pain bugs the crap out of me. Next!
- Notorious B.I.G. vs. Van Halen - “The Notorious DLR”How ironic is it that a dead man (Biggie) could release more worthwhile music in the last 10 years than a living, breathing band?
So, does all that irony make anyone else feel a creeping sense of self-loathing and a desire for tighter jeans?
Anyone?
Uh… me neither.
