TBTMTU: Aurgasm

April 23rd, 2008 by Kimberlee Morrison · No Comments

”Expect music curiously different, yet simply enjoyable.”

If there is nothing else I have learned in my recent search for music blogs is that, much like record stores, music blogs are a great way to discover music and artists you’ve never heard of before. This week’s TBTMTU featured blog, Aurgasm, prides itself on doing just that.

I think it was the name of this blog that first drew me in, the analogy of an music so good it induces an auditory orgasm. In the end it was the soothing colors, simplicity and discovery of new artists that kept me going back.

The site is run by Paul Irish – a self confessed web geek who doesn’t like “bands,” and while there are a few other regular contributors, Aurgasm is definitely Irish’s baby. From groovy and ambient, to jazz and folk; a quick look will let you know that the collective tendency of Aurgasm’s writers is toward dreamy and subtle, grown folks music.

Each entry consists of a short description of the featured artist and an MP3 or two for your sampling pleasure. There is an extensive blogroll featuring other MP3 blogs as well as other music sites. I thought it strange that the tags were not clickable, however buried at the end of the blogroll and past the disclaimers is a list of categories. You can also search the Aurgasm archives by keyword or by month if you are so inclined. Honestly, I’ve never been one to dig into music blog archives.

Aurgasm is not updated daily. In fact as far as I could tell, it was updated sporadically but you can depend on at least a few entries a month. This is not the place to go for your daily music news fix, the latest buzz, or anything mainstream. There is, however, always something interesting, substantive and worth giving a chance. Even if you find that you don’t like everything, you’ll no doubt agree that the folks at Aurgasm know good music.
