It’s an age old question, one whose true answer may never be agreed upon, it also happens to be a really great music blog: Gorilla vs. Bear and today’s They Bring The Music To Us feature.

Hailing from Dallas, Texas, and started in 2005, Gorilla vs. Bear has become one of the most popular music blogs to date. Ask anyone who is a fan of music blogs to list a few off the top of their head and this one will probably be on the list along with the likes of Pitchfork and Stereogum. However, GvsB started out as humble as any new music blog does, and gained their popularity through consistent quality posting and a great voice.

One thing I like to do when I look at a music blog for the first time is see if I can go all the way back into their archives and dig out the very first post. The amount of background info you can get from seeing a blog in its newborn state and comparing it to what it has evolved into today is amazing. It also lets you experience the voice of the author easily and directly without it being clouded by shiny gimmicks or references to posts you haven’t read yet.

GvsB’s first post, was titled Another Music Blog, and detailed its mission statement.

This blog will be mainly about music I like and will hopefully eventually have mp3s and reviews. It will also probably include celebrity sightings and other worthless info about me and my friends in dallas. My first post will be a SXSW ‘05 wrap up and a couple cd reviews. The name of my blog was inspired by a long-standing argument between a couple of my friends about who would win in a fight. I say the gorilla, hands down. I mean look at that thing, its vicious.

Gorilla vs Bear has come a long way, and now the authors are even hosts of Sirius Radio’s Blog Radio show along with a few other heavy hitters of the music blog scene.

Notable features: the archives of concert photos, including the flickr set of artist polaroids.
