Bumbershoot Weekend Preview: Part I

August 25th, 2008 by Tanya Payne · No Comments

Bumbershoot LogoI am northbound this weekend, heading to Seattle for the 38th annual Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival. Instead of looking forward to school I get to anticipate 3 days of all things art in a city I’ve never seen. Sweetening an already sweet deal, I’m attending with my best friend writing partner Kymlee and have press passes, making this a tax write-off to boot.

Of course, there are drawbacks to all encompassing festivals. Seattle Center is huge and atListen In Logo 3 days the festival is both bigger and longer than other festivals we’ve covered. I agree with Kymlee’s assertion in her Weekend Preview just looking at the breadth of this festival strikes fatigue in my bones. Performances on several stages at the same time in addition to compromises with Kimberlee means I will miss stuff. Music is our focus but Bumbershoot includes all sorts of pleasant diversions for the senses. I hope to dabble in a few.

    Saturday Highlight Hopefuls

  • The Fall of Troy, please cut a swatch through all the emotive folk I will be forced to endure.
  • I will love Beck, no matter what.
  • Might Trent Reznor join Saul Williams for material from The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust? One can only hope.
    Sunday’s Guilty Pleasures

  • My head will bop involuntarily if T.I. performs “You Know What It Is” or “U Don’t Know Me,” monotony of his beats be damned.
  • I only want to catch Jakob Dylan’s set because he’s so pretty.
  • I plan on sleeping in and doing yoga instead of catching the morning’s press conference.
    Monday’s Missions

Chester French

  • Secure autographed LP from The Offspring for my boyfriend, the trooper.
  • Convince Kymlee she really wants to see Chester French.
  • Drink nothing but water all day.

Check back tomorrow for my weekend predictions. You’ll also find my ideal schedule forJakob Dylan comparison to Kymlee’s. Check our Kimya column Culture Critics over the weekend for the scoop.
