The final day of ACL has come and gone, unfortunately I had to leave early, but I did get to catch a few of the acts playing, but overall wasn’t that impressed.
I woke up dangerously late today, at 8:30, and decided to throw personal hygiene to the wind, and had to scramble to get to the bus. I ended up going to eat at Hickory St. on Spiffie’s recommendation, figuring that if I was going to be late I might as well get something out of it. It turned out however that I still made it to the festival right on time after eating.
One of the bands I was most excited to see today was The Kills (Web, Myspace), I’ve heard a lot about them but have never checked them out. Well, I think it’s safe to say that The Kills didn’t have as good a time as everyone else out there that day. Today was noticeably hotter than the first two days, and Alison Mosshart was having none of it, exclaiming “I don’t do sun guys, sorry”, she retreated upstage into the shadows (it didn’t help that she was dressed all in black and wearing a long sleeve shirt). She later came back out into the sun, but held her fedora in front of her face while singing, and paused in between songs to drink water and cool her head with a towel dipped in ice water. They ended their set about five minutes early, with Jamie Hince’s final words being “Come back and see us when it’s dark, this is bullshit!”.
I wasn’t impressed.
After The Kills I headed over to the Flyleaf (Web, Myspace) stage. Honestly, I’m really not a fan of their type of music, but I did enjoy their show. Lead singer Lacey Mosley talked to the audience quite a bit in between songs and shared the story of how one of their songs “Tina” came to be; a sad story about a girl who had been seriously burned after an attempted suicide, whose ordeal made her find God, who talked to Flyleaf after one of their shows in their early years, opening for another band.
They put on a good show and seemed to engage the audience well.
After them I made my way over to see Stars (Myspace), where I realized that ACL is actually just one 3 day long commercial for Ray-Ban Wayfarers sunglasses. That’s pretty much all I took from that, I only stayed halfway through the first song, Stars just don’t do it for me for whatever reason (perhaps my contempt for all things Canadian).
Knowing that I would have to leave soon, I was hopefully looking foward to a nice Silversun Pickups (Web, Myspace), but to me their set just sounded like noise, I think I might be getting old.
As far as ranking goes, Day 2 was king, followed by Day 1 and then Day 3, I’ll have a concise overview of the entire festival experience soon.
