When Gnarls Barkley broke out with the debut single “Crazy,” it was as if they literally started a craze. The song was in high rotation on practically every radio station, became a standard for Las Vegas lounge performers, and sparked other strange and creative remakes. The album St. Elsewhere won critical acclaim but may well have been the peak of the musical careers of both Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo, in terms of celebrity.

Listening In Live to All Points West Day Three
August 12th, 2008 by Eric Atienza
After a supreme act of will got my aching legs and I out of bed Sunday morning, after the hour and a half train ride, and after the long walk to the park, I found myself waiting in the growing gloom for Rogue Wave (Web site, Myspace) to begin their set. Mike Dojc did some interesting math (that I believe I also saw in a local Chicago magazine at Lollapalooza) that I’ll try out for the bands I saw on day 3.

Listening In Live to All Points West Day Two
August 10th, 2008 by Eric Atienza
As day two of All Points West opened I found myself once again in front of the Blue Comet stage with the summer sun bearing down, this time waiting for Chromeo (Web site, Myspace) to begin their set. At this point the hour and a half train ride and half an hour walk to the park had begun to put a cramp in my entire lower body, but the prospect of another day of music drove me on.

Listening in Live to All Points West Day One
August 9th, 2008 by Eric Atienza
Barely recovered from Lollapalooza last weekend, I set out to cover the first annual All Points West festival this weekend in Liberty State Park, New Jersey. I didn’t know what to expect going in, but if day one was any indication APW will be quite an entertaining weekend.

Listening In Live to Lollapalooza Day 3
August 4th, 2008 by Eric Atienza
Just as I finished work on my recap of day two crisp, slick DJ beats began pouring from the south main stage, adjacent to the press area. The club hip-hop that the set developed into sounded fun and fresh and i quickly rushed to the fence, schedule in hand, to see who was playing.

Listening In Live to Lollapalooza Day 2
August 3rd, 2008 by Eric Atienza
I started off day two cursing my apparent inability to read a schedule as I waited 45 minutes for the Ting Tings (Web site, Myspace) to start their set. As I sat looking around and longing for the shade of the press tent, Matthew Mcconaughey’s immortal line from “Dazed and Confused” rang through my head: “That’s what I like about high school girls. I keep getting older; they stay the same age.” I managed to avoid any arrest-worthy thoughts as the crowd stood up and the band took the stage.

Listening In Live to Lollapalooza Day 1
August 2nd, 2008 by Eric Atienza
After two quick breakfasts (one unexpected and one free) I began the walk Grant Park under the summer sun with colleague Viki Gonia. Twenty minutes of walking quickly made me rethink the idea of seeing Rogue Wave (Web site, Myspace) and instead I lounged in the press area drinking beer. After a quick rest and quasi-rejuvenation it was off to the Bud Light stage on the far side of the park. The walk was unshaded for the most part, though quick dips into the XRT lounge area near the BMI stage provided much needed respite from the heat.

Mix: To Everything There is a Season - Summer 2008
July 30th, 2008 by Eric Atienza
Since it’s officially (been) summer (for over a month now) it’s also officially time for another seasonal playlist. For those who haven’t been keeping track at home every season I make a playlist that epitomizes the feeling inspired by that time of year. This summer list starts off much like the spring one did: with light, airy, toe-tapping tunes. These lead into some songs that are dancier, and a few that are pretty damned party before (relatively) cooling down.
