Listening In Live to Lollapalooza Day 2

August 3rd, 2008 by Eric Atienza

lolla-sign.jpgI started off day two cursing my apparent inability to read a schedule as I waited 45 minutes for the Ting Tings (Web site, Myspace) to start their set. As I sat looking around and longing for the shade of the press tent, Matthew Mcconaughey’s immortal line from “Dazed and Confused” rang through my head: “That’s what I like about high school girls. I keep getting older; they stay the same age.” I managed to avoid any arrest-worthy thoughts as the crowd stood up and the band took the stage.

Listening In Live to Lollapalooza Day 1

August 2nd, 2008 by Eric Atienza

lolla-sign.jpgAfter two quick breakfasts (one unexpected and one free) I began the walk Grant Park under the summer sun with colleague Viki Gonia. Twenty minutes of walking quickly made me rethink the idea of seeing Rogue Wave (Web site, Myspace) and instead I lounged in the press area drinking beer. After a quick rest and quasi-rejuvenation it was off to the Bud Light stage on the far side of the park. The walk was unshaded for the most part, though quick dips into the XRT lounge area near the BMI stage provided much needed respite from the heat.

Mix: To Everything There is a Season - Summer 2008

July 30th, 2008 by Eric Atienza

Since it’s officially (been) summer (for over a month now) it’s also officially time for another seasonal playlist. For those who haven’t been keeping track at home every season I make a playlist that epitomizes the feeling inspired by that time of year. This summer list starts off much like the spring one did: with light, airy, toe-tapping tunes. These lead into some songs that are dancier, and a few that are pretty damned party before (relatively) cooling down.

TBTMTU: Condemned to Rock ‘N Roll

July 30th, 2008 by Jacob Nicolas

I have to say that even though I do this They Bring The Music To Us series every week, featuring a new blog, very few of condemned-to-rock-n-roll.pngthem make a significant impression on me. That isn’t to say that those blogs aren’t awesome in their own right, and even if I don’t think they are I believe that they still deserve to be brought to the attention of one of you who may not have heard of them otherwise. Having said that, today’s TBTMTU featured blog Condemned to Rock ‘N Roll is simply breathtaking.

Listening In Live To Bon Iver at The Crofoot Ballroom 07/21/08

July 22nd, 2008 by Steve Mock

Justin Vernon and company unloaded their souls last night in an extremely moving live incarnation of ‘the record’. As a tangible hush often filled the space, about 300 admirers showed great respect for the band and material throughout.

Women in Music: Sleater-Kinney

July 15th, 2008 by Eric Atienza

sk1.jpgMusically speaking, conversation regarding Washington State is usually reduced to a certain pair of grunge bands that made somewhat of a splash in the early 90s. Less (if anything) is said about three women from Olympia who invaded the rock and roll boys club to deliver some of the most biting, acerbic, and gritty music to spring from the American indie scene.

What’s the Big Deal with Amy Winehouse?

July 11th, 2008 by Kimberlee Morrison

Since her 2007 break out album Back to Black, Amy Winehouse has become a tabloid queen. The world watches with pity and fascination as she plays out a classic tale of the drug addicted songstress on a downward spiral. Winehouse may have thwarted the sophomore slump with Back to Black - winning Winehouse critical acclaim and five Grammys in February, including Best New Artist - however, Winehouse’s success has been plagued with the dark cloud of her drug and alcohol addiction causing sloppy and/or canceled performances, as well as a cornucopia of health and legal problems.
